Where does the thoracic duct begin?

The thoracic duct begins in the abdomen at a structure known as the cisterna chyli. This sac-like dilation acts as a reservoir that collects lymph from various regions of the body, particularly from the lower limbs, pelvic organs, and abdominal organs. The cisterna chyli is located posterior to the aorta and is considered the starting point of the thoracic duct, which then ascends through the diaphragm and into the thoracic cavity where it ultimately drains into the venous system at the junction of the left internal jugular and left subclavian veins.
